Countryside Veterinary Services from Loco visited the Stephens County Fairgrounds Saturday in conjunction with Bark in the Park.
During the event, rabies vaccinations were provided for cats, ferrets, and dogs for $10 each. A
recent rabies outbreak helped initiate the impromptu clinic. The outbreak was traced to a goat.
Vaccines were on a first-come, first-served basis. Countryside also offered flea and tick medications at
an extra cost. Three Duncan residents are currently undergoing treatment due to being infected with rabies. Veterinarian Carolyn McIemore, the owner of Countryside, said rabies affects both small and large
animals. According to McLemore, there have been four cases within Stephens County in 2024. So far,
there have been 21 cases in Oklahoma. Rabies is a disease caused by the rabies virus. It affects warm-blooded animals’ nervous systems. This includes humans. To prevent any more outbreaks, the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture vaccinated all of their goats following the outbreak.
