According to Accuweather, mostly cloudy and very warm temperatures will heat up the yard and garage sales next week. That should make the World’s Largest Garage Sale in Duncan and the Second Chance Trade Days in Marlow a little warmer for both shoppers and those hosting sales this year. Accuweather’s long reach forecast says there is a slight chance for precipitation and winds should be light from the south/southeast during the four day event
An annual tradition in Duncan now in its 40th year, World’s Largest Garage Sale is a true community wide event with multiple sales happening in all of Duncan’s residential neighborhoods and sidewalk sales happening in retail areas of the city. The annual event began during the downturn of the oil industry in the ‘80’s and has continued as a tradition in the Duncan Area.
Also, Marlow residents join in the fun with their city wide sales, named Second Chance Trade Days.
Drivers are urged to use caution as they ply the streets as sometimes over enthusiastic shoppers will emerge from cars or from between parked cars and dash across the street seeking a bargain.
In both towns visitors will find residential sales beginning as early as Thursday, with the majority of all sales being held on the Friday and Saturday. Hours will vary by location.
Garage sale enthusiasts will find a listing of sales and business specials in the Wednesday, July 16 issue of the Chisholm Trail Community News, the week of the sale. For those who don’t know the layout of the city, maps are available by stopping by the Chisholm Trail Community News located across the highway from McDonald’s; 3456 North Hwy 81. Additional free papers and maps will be located outside the office in news racks if no one is there.
Besides the many garage and yard sales throughout the county, visitors are reminded to visit Fuqua Park and see all things train related at the 905 Train Depot and Museum, the interactive Rhythm and Routes Exhibit at the Stephens County Historical Museum celebrating Hoyt and Mae Axton and, of course, enjoy the rides at Kiwanis’ Kiddieland all weekend long.
While in Duncan, garage sale visitors should take the time to see the four Bob Palmer murals scattered around the city including a tribute to the Oklahoma Music Trail that celebrates Duncan’s own Hoyt Axton and his mother, Mae Boren Axton. The Rhythm and Routes mural can be seen at the corner of 7th and Main Street on the east side of the historic Henderson building, And no visit would be complete without stopping in to say howdy at the Chisholm Trail Heritage Center, 1000 Chisholm Trail Parkway.
This annual tradition continues to grow year after year, with the community’s population increasing by 8,000 to 10,000 people over the course of the weekend.
World’s Largest Garage Sale is certain to have a treasure or three waiting to be found and Duncan’s hospitality will make you want to visit again.
Let the hunt begin!
