On Nov. 21 at 1 p.m., the Duncan Public Library will have an interactive workshop that will simulate life with Alzheimer’s Disease. Jessica Allmon, Outreach Coordinator, said that the event is going to include glasses, headphones, and shoe inserts.

These will provide participants with the sensory experience that those who live with dementia and Alzheimer’s experience.

“The team received training in Georgia and returned to Oklahoma to bring this educational experience to the public,” Allmon said.

Certified Dementia Practitioner Diane Hugar said that to experience dementia, these items will safely alter the senses of a participant.

According to Hugar, the glasses dim your sight and the headphones will have background noises. The gloves make it difficult to pick anything up and the shoes mimic neuropathy.

Neuropathy is a nerve condition that causes pain, tingling, numbness, swelling, or muscle weakness in various parts of the body.

“These are some of all the things that the elders go through as they age, and this gives so much more of an experience. It also ‘opens discussions with a little more understanding,’” Hugar said.
