DHS Class of ‘74 Celebrates 50th this Week

by Wayne Watts, CTCN Publisher

The Duncan Demon’s Class of 1974 is coming together this weekend following fifty years from graduation. A few things have changed over fifty years. In 1974 gasoline was 53¢ a gallon. A new car costs just over $11,000. A first-class stamp was 8¢. It was the Sonic on North 81, The A&W on South 81, and Herman’s Pig Stand on East Main with the Dairy Queen and Tastee Freeze in between as the ‘drag’.
Other hangin’ places included the Palace Theatre, the Duncan Drive-In Theatre, the Copeland’s Skating Rink, and of course Twilight Beach. Great memories.
Hopefully, good memories will be stirred up as those who have been away for a while will reconnect with those who stayed.
The agenda is allowing those out-of-towners to come “Explore Duncan” on their own on Friday, September 20. Undoubtedly there have been a few changes in the last half century of the town that these graduates grew up in. Brochures and street maps are available in the north end of the lobby at the Simmons Center to help them navigate around the area.
The class will congregate at Kochendorfer’s Craft Brewery at 6:00 pm for a casual get-together where drinks and food will be available for purchase. Kochendorfer’s is located in the North Industrial Park at 1155 McCurdy Road.
Saturday’s events will include a tour of Duncan High School at 10 am. Certainly, changes have been made over the past five decades in the campus the 65+ year old’s grew up in.
A Downtown Duncan tour will begin at the Duncan Tower Shoppes, 45 North 9th Street, the recently refurbished Perkins Building. Lunch and shopping will be of interest there as classmates visit and reminisce.
The class members will head out west of town to the Territory Golf Course for a poolside event at 6 pm. Food will be provided and the program will begin at 7 pm. It is a great place to relax and reconnect with friends and stories of past days and youthful fun.
Welcome back to those who have been away for a time. We hope you have a great weekend in Duncan.
