State Sen. Darrell Weaver and his spouse, Dr. Kim Weaver, have been to the nation’s capital more than once. Friday will begin their first trip to Washington, D.C., to attend the inauguration of a president.
“I think it’s just part of the foundation of America,” he said. “The peaceful transfer of power is so important to our nation, and to see that happen is pretty important.”
While the Republican senator represents the 24th District centered on Moore, he and Kim have deep roots in Stephens County, including the headquarters of the Weaver Clinics in Duncan. Four more clinics are scattered around the area for a total of five.
“Between my wife and I, I think we’re just about related to everyone in Stephens County,” he said.
Their itinerary for the days ahead is a full one, beginning with a dinner with friends in Washington on Friday. On Saturday, they will attend the Oklahoma Ball where they expect to meet more legislators, officials and friends from the Sooner state.
“Sunday, we’re going to the Capitol to retrieve our (inauguration) tickets,” he said. “You have to pick those up in person.”
The same afternoon, they will join the crowd for one of President-elect Trump’s famous rallies and take in a leadership reception later.
“Monday, the big day, we’ll be bundled up,” Weaver said. “It’s supposed to be 32 degrees and no wind, which is shirt-sleeve weather if you’re from Oklahoma, but we’ll be out there for hours, standing and socializing, waiting for the swearing-in at noon.”
The big ceremony is followed by a bigger parade, which the Weavers will also attend. At some point, they hope to squeeze in visits to Mount Vernon and Monticello, and maybe, if they’re lucky, a tour of the White House.
“We’re looking forward to the trip. Enjoy it. Take it in,” Weaver said. W”e feel like it will make a lasting impression in our lives.”
