Sixteen local Oklahomans and 20 faraway Hoosiers will join together this weekend in Burnsville, N.C., to provide meals to residents and volunteers in a community hard hit by Hurricane Helene.
A crew of linemen from Connersville, Ind., working to restore power to residents, pointed Chris Lovett and his Indiana church members to Burnsville. Raised in Marlow, Lovett called on his uncle, Pastor Billy Morgan, and members of the Freedom Biker Church in Duncan to help.
“He (Chris) started doing this a couple of years before I did,” said Morgan, who has led trucks filled with food and cooking supplies to disaster areas seven times. He volunteered after Katrina, and he’s been to Moss Bluff, La., and Arcadia, Fla., among others.
The hardest task for the volunteers is reaching the areas where the need is greatest, Morgan said. Roads are blocked or washed away. Power lines are down.
“The most important thing we need is for people to pray for us, pray that we’re getting to where we need,” he said. “But we’re going. It’s a faith walk.”
The volunteers have faith too that they can raise enough money to pay for the food. They’re about halfway there and trusting God for the rest.
Once they arrive in Burnsville, they’ll unload the trucks in a church parking lot and start serving pulled pork sandwiches, green beans, and potatoes — a full meal, 3,000 of them daily for two weeks.
“They’re extremely grateful,” he said of the hurricane victims. “They’re just surprised someone would drive all that way.”
Only 15 percent of Morgan’s congregation are bikers, Morgan said. The other 85 percent are “normal” people, he added, counting himself among the bikers. The church is chartered by the Southern Baptist Convention. Donations can be sent to Freedom Biker Church, P.O. Box 760, Duncan, OK 74534.
