OHCE met on August 1st at the Stephens County Fairgrounds. Carol Byford-Hall was the hostess. Donnita Hall gave a devotional about being prepared in life so that we can “sleep when the wind blows”. By being grounded in God’s word we can be prepared when the storms of life hit. There were 23 members present and Suzanne Buckley was welcomes as a guest. She decided to join as a member, and we welcome her to OHCE.
Sue Smith, membership committee chair reported that she and Brendy Gandy-Jones, OSU Extension Educator from Stephens County went to Tishamingo, OK on the 17th and 18th and conducted Barn Quilt classes for folks from Love, Marshall, Carter, Johnston and Bryan Counties. It was good to share the technique and history of this artform with others eager to learn.
Preparations are in full swing for the upcoming Stephens County Fair to be held August 14th through the 17th. There is a Fair workday for all county OHCE groups on August 7th at 9:30 am and a Fair Workers Appreciation Dinner on August 12th at 6 pm at the fairgrounds. All workers are encouraged to attend. Anyone interested in information about the fair can go online at stephenscountyfairandexpocenter.com where the fair book containing all information about the fair can be viewed and downloaded. The entire county is encouraged to attend, there will be something for everyone.
Various groups will be serving meals at lunch and dinner all days. These are fundraisers for youth programs across the county. All county OHCE groups will be making homemade pies with slices to be sold all days of the Fair. This is the only county OHCE fundraiser and monies earned will support our many community education projects as well as scholarships for higher education. Everyone is welcome to come to this free fair, enjoy a meal and a slice of pie and look at the exhibits. All county residents, youth and adult, are encouraged to enter the Fair.
